  • Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
  • Camping only (no huts)
  • Best months: Jan–Mar, Jun–Oct

⭐ BEST ACCLIMATIZATION

Lemosho Route

8–9 Days | Best Acclimatization

The Lemosho Route offers the best acclimatization profile and the most pristine wilderness experience. Starting from the remote Londorossi Gate, climbers pass through untouched forests before joining the Machame Route higher up. The extra days make a significant difference.

  • Distance: 70 km round trip
  • Best acclimatization of all routes
  • Fewest crowds on lower slopes
  • Gentle early days on the Shira Plateau
  • Joins Machame at Shira Plateau
Plan the Book Lemosho Route

Marangu Route

5–6 Days | "The Coca-Cola Route"

The only route with permanent hut accommodation instead of camping. Marangu is the most budget-friendly option and historically the most popular route. Its shorter duration means less acclimatization time, resulting in a lower summit success rate.

  • Distance: 64 km round trip
  • Dormitory hut accommodation
  • Same ascent and descent path
  • Best budget option
  • Family and senior-friendly

Kilimanjaro Training Guide

You don't need to be an athlete, but Kilimanjaro demands 3 months of consistent preparation. Here's exactly how to train for your climb.

Months 1–2: Base Fitness

3-4 cardio sessions per week: running (30-45 min), cycling, swimming, or rowing. Add one long weekend hike (4-6 hours). Focus on building aerobic base — you need cardiovascular endurance, not strength.

Month 3: Specific Prep

Two long hikes per week with elevation gain. If possible, hike carrying a 8-10kg daypack. Weekend hike goal: 6-8 hours with 800-1,200m of elevation gain. Practice hiking poles technique. Reduce running — hike-specific fitness is different.

Final 2 Weeks: Taper

Reduce training intensity by 50%. Short easy hikes only. Focus on rest, hydration, and nutrition. Ensure all gear is broken in and tested. If taking Diamox, start under doctor supervision. Sleep well — your body repairs during sleep.

On The Mountain

"Pole pole" (slowly slowly in Swahili) is the mantra of Kilimanjaro. Walk slower than feels natural — this is how you acclimatize. Drink 3-4 litres of water daily. Eat full meals even when not hungry. Report any headaches, nausea, or dizziness to your guide immediately.

Kilimanjaro climbs take between 5 and 9 days depending on the route. Marangu 5–6 days, Machame 7–8 days, Lemosho 8–9 days, Rongai 6–7 days. Longer routes have higher success rates due to better acclimatization time.

What is the best route to climb Kilimanjaro?

The Lemosho Route (8–9 days) gives the best acclimatization. Machame (7–8 days) is the most popular. For budget-conscious climbers, Marangu is the most affordable. We recommend Lemosho or Machame for first-timers seeking the best experience.

How can I improve my chance of reaching the summit?

Choose a longer route, walk "pole pole" (slowly), drink plenty of water and follow your guide's advice on acclimatization. Ask us for our current figures for your chosen route.

Is altitude sickness a serious risk?

Altitude sickness (AMS) is the main reason climbers don't summit. Symptoms: headache, nausea, fatigue, dizziness. Risk is manageable with: longer routes, slow pacing, hydration, and our carried rescue oxygen. Our guides are trained to recognize and respond to AMS.
