Great Migration Safaris in the Serengeti

The Great Migration is the year-round movement of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle around the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem, followed by the predators that depend on them. Seeing it well is mostly about timing and location: the herds are in a different part of the Serengeti in different months.

We plan migration safaris around where the herds are likely to be during your dates and place you in camps within reach of them, rather than following a fixed route.

Who It Suits

  • Wildlife lovers who want to see the herds and predators
  • Photographers interested in river crossings or calving season
  • Travelers with fixed dates who want a route timed to them

Where are the herds?

December to March: southern Serengeti and Ndutu, with calving usually peaking around February. April to June: the herds move through the central and western Serengeti. July to October: northern Serengeti, where Mara River crossings happen. November: the herds move south again with the short rains.

Is a river crossing guaranteed?

No. Crossings depend on the herds, the weather and luck. Spending more than one day in the northern Serengeti between July and October gives you the best chance.

Questions We Are Often Asked

When is the best time to see the migration?

There is no single best month. February is known for calving in the south and July to October for river crossings in the north. Tell us your travel dates and we will plan around where the herds are likely to be.

How many days do I need for a migration safari?

We recommend at least three nights in the Serengeti itself, which usually means a safari of six days or more including the drive in from Arusha.
